In 2006, Owen bought his vehicle design experience back to the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre as a part time Senior Research Associate, working on the Designing Future Ambulances Project.

A collaborative project between the National Patient Safety Assocation, the HHRC, Loughborough University and the Ambulance Service Association, the project aimed to take a stratgic view of ambulance design, production and requirements in the UK, and propose a road map for future developments.

Owen presented the project at the Human Frame exhibition at the Royal College of Art in 2006
